Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need a GP referral to book physiotherapy?
No — you can book directly with us anytime. A GP referral is only needed if your private health insurance requires it.
What conditions do you treat?
We treat a full range of injuries including back pain, neck pain, shoulder injuries, sports injuries, joint issues, arthritis, post-surgery rehab, muscle strains, and more.
What happens during my first physiotherapy session?
Your physiotherapist will assess your injury, ask questions about your symptoms, test movement and strength, explain the diagnosis clearly, and begin hands-on treatment and exercises.
How long is a physiotherapy appointment?
Initial assessments are usually 45 minutes. Follow-up sessions are typically 30 minutes.
Do you offer hands-on treatment?
Yes — we use a combination of manual therapy, mobilisation, soft tissue techniques, dry needling, massage and exercise therapy depending on your needs and goals.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable, loose clothing. If we need to assess a specific area (e.g., shoulder or knee), it may be best to bring shorts or vest. We can provide shorts if needed.

Can physiotherapy help long-standing or old injuries?
Absolutely. Many chronic or long-term injuries improve significantly with the right assessment and targeted treatment.
Do you offer dry needling or acupuncture?
Yes — both. Dry needling targets tight muscles, while acupuncture focuses on pain relief, tension reduction and holistic balance. Your physio will guide you on which suits your condition.
Does physiotherapy hurt?
Some treatments may cause slight discomfort, but nothing should be painful. We always work within your comfort level and explain everything clearly.
Can I still exercise while injured?
In many cases, YES. We’ll show you what movements to avoid and what you can safely continue. We work with you in order to stay active and enjoy what is meaningful to you.
Do you work with sports injuries?
Yes — from runners and gym users to footballers and golfers. We provide taping, strengthening, rehab plans and return-to-sport testing, all tailored to your sport and goals.
Do you provide post-surgery rehabilitation?
Yes, including rehab for ACL surgery, rotator cuff repair, hip/knee replacements, spinal surgery and more. We can also provide pre-op Physiotherapy to get you ready for your surgery so your outcomes are more successful.

What’s the difference between physio and massage?
Physiotherapy treats the cause of your pain through assessment, diagnosis, hands-on techniques (including massage) and tailored exercises. Massage focuses mainly on relaxation and muscle tension. We can provide both to suit your specific needs.
Can you help with workplace-related pain?
Definitely. We treat desk-related neck/back pain, repetitive strain injuries, manual handling issues, and offer ergonomic advice.
Do you offer taping or strapping?
Yes — kinesiology taping and sports taping for knees, shoulders, ankles, plantar fascia, and more.
Can physiotherapy help avoid surgery?
In many cases, yes. Strengthening and mobility work can significantly reduce symptoms and may prevent the need for invasive procedures.
Do you treat children or teenagers?
Yes — especially sports injuries, growing pains, posture issues, and activity-related aches.
Is parking available at your clinic?
Yes — Impact Health Physio is located at Valley Business Centre, Newtownabbey, with free onsite parking.
